Fat Lesbians

Lesbians are two-and-a-half times as likely to be fat as straight women. So reports the Toronto Star. Apparently there’s a new study too that effect in this week’s American Journal of Public Health. I don’t have access to the full text, but here’s the abstract

I’d like to see the full text of the journal article, because the Star implies that fatness among lesbians may have something to do with a “better body image”. But the journal abstract concludes:

This finding suggests that lesbians are at greater risk for morbidity and mortality linked to overweight and obesity.  This finding also highlights the need for interventions within this population.

Which makes you wonder how exactly they’ll intervene if  “better body image” is what they think is causing excess weight.

 A shame campaign perhaps?

Hokay…., speaking as someone who went to a school known for having an extremely public lesbian population, my experience is that while many of those lesbians were heavier than what was considered attractive by main stream culture, they were well within range of what might be considered “normal” weight assuming we lost our obsession with thin.

Also, I notice the phrasing of the last couple of sentences in the abstract is intentionally alarming. I have to wonder; has anyone actually studied lesbian health vs. weight? Hmm… I know someone who could do the work.

Arggh, missed a space. Note to blog owner: please give us a preview option for posts. I’m fairly sure that WordPress has the capability.

I edited your post to add the space. I Wish I could add a preview option for comments. I think it’s irritating too.

I checked it out, the option doesn’t exist for the hosted wordpress blogs. For the opensource blogging software that you use on your own server, that may be an option.

    See here for a discussion

I’d imagine that lesbians could tend to weigh more than straight women for the obvious reason: they’re more understanding of how difficult it is for most women to be “thin,” and they aren’t as attached to thinness as the only way of being beautiful, as straight people are. Duh.
